Pappa Coffee



Pappa Coffee may be small in size; occupying a 5 x 4 meter rectangular space with a varnished wooden bar, it is very South Europeanesque. But since it was built three weeks ago, this small stall residing at Jalan Riau no.55, right across Halmahera Hospital, has started to get recognition from the coffee community from this “a thousand factory outlet” city.




I’ve been communicating by phone several times with Geri Satya Wicaksana Syafwan (26), the owner of Pappa Coffee, who is currently busy hunting equipments for his coffee stall. “How about this machine? Is this a good grinder? What was your experience in using this brand?” are just some of the questions I was flooded with on our Bandung-Jakarta phone conversations. Last Tuesday, I escaped to Bandung with my daughter, Nona, and managed to stop by at Pappa Coffee, although unfortunately, we didn’t meet Geri. But it was enough seeing Geri’s determination in starting this business, judging by the  red Italian coffee machine and a distinctive grey grinder who were sitting prettily, contrasting the cozily spaced stall.



In the corner, stand all kinds of equipment often seen and used at big cafés, and that’s what Pappa Coffee is about – the result of a collaboration between Geri and his wife, Sylvia Suharja (25), who has voluntarily dived into the coffee world, thanks to Geri’s relentless influence.
This is the second coffee house owned by Geri, after opening a similar place a year ago called The Ranch; a horse-riding ranch facility for children in Lembang. In this ranch, Geri gives a knowledgeable program about coffee planting for children, which he hopes will continue on in the future. Ever since the beginning, Pappa Coffee has been producing and roasting its own coffee, a step that is definitely recommended in improving the coffee flavour, offering a distinguished taste that no other cafés can provide. Today, Pappa Coffee has added the festivity of Bandung’s special coffee community, and I’m waiting for this stall to be operating 24/7 on the weekends, so the all-nighters in Bandung (including me), can enjoy Bandung in all its serenity.

Pappa Coffee boleh saja berukuran kedai kopi kecil yang hanya sepenggal kotak berukuran 5×4 meter yang bar-nya terbuat dari kayu yang dipoles vernis mengkilat, gaya dapur Eropa Utara. Tapi keberadaanya di jalan Riau no.55 55 persis di depan RS Halmahera yang baru berumur tiga minggu bukan hanya mulai dikenali komunitas kopi, tapi juga pelancong di kota seribu factory outlet ini.

Sebetulnya saya sudah beberapa kali berkomunikasi telepon dengan Geri Satya Wicaksana Syafwan (26 tahun), pemilik Pappa Coffee saat ia tengah sibuk mencari peralatan untuk warung kopinya. Mesin ini bagaimana ? grinder ini bagus nggak ? Apa pengalaman menggunakan merek ini ? Begitu kira-kira obrolan telepon Bandung-Jakarta.

Selasa minggu tadi saat melancong ke Bandung saya menyempatkan mampir dengan anak saya Nona walau memang tak beruntung bertemu dengan sang pemilik Pappa Coffee. Tapi rasanya sudah cukup melihat keseriusan Geri yang sudah mengakuisisi mesin kopi berwarna merah dari Italia dan alat penggiling kopi berwarna abu-abu terlepas dari ukuran tempat usahanya yang kecil.
Sudut kopi di halaman outlet dengan peralatan sekaliber cafe besar, itulah Pappa Coffee hasil kolaborasi dengan sang calon istri Sylvia Suharja (25 tahun) yang telah secara “sukarela” berkiprah di dunia kopi akibat “racun”  manjur dari Geri.

Ini warung kopi kedua yang dimiliki oleh Geri setelah setahun sebelumnya membuka ruang yang sama di The Ranch, sarana berkuda dan edukasi bagi anak-anak di kawasan Lembang. Di taman permainan ini Geri pernah memberikan program pengetahuan tentang tanaman kopi bagi anak-anak yang diharapkan akan segera berlanjut di waktu yang akan datang.

Sejak berdiri Pappa Coffee memproduksi sendiri kopi hasil “gorengan” mereka, sebuah langkah yang selalu dianjurkan dalam upaya mengembangkan rasa kopi yang lebih punya “roh” cafe yang bersangkutan. Kini Pappa Coffee sudah meramaikan keberadaan kopi spesial di kota Bandung dan saya menunggu warung kopi ini buka 24 jam di akhir pekan agar kegiatan “ngalong” orang Bandung seperti saya lebih lebih syahdu dengan secangkir kopi panas.
